which one would you prefer if there were no other options?

Chosen Answer:

I would probably go with Norton, but I would turn off the backup feature and the tune up tools in Norton. Those two are very close. You can’t go wrong with either one. The one feature in Kaspersky I like is being able to run programs in a sandbox. That is a strong security feature that is hard to beat. Since I already use my own sandbox, I give the edge to Norton.

Chosen Answer:

I agree with emiconpet’s suggestion that you use MalwareBytes, but you already have an antivirus, so installing avast! is a really, really bad idea. Stick with your Kaspersky until the subscription runs out…

Chosen Answer:

Hi from France ♫

You should keep Kaspersky ! … It is one of the best anti-virus … Otherwise there are : Avast 6 ( free or pay version), Windows Security Essential ( free).. The list goes on and on…
Then there are anti-malwares like : Malwarebyte ( free), Spybot & Search ( free)… Less good : Superantispyware ( free)…

I downloaded Avast! but it says it will not protect me from viruses or spyware after 30 days. I really need an antivirus I can depend on forever.

Chosen Answer:

The best anti-virus is Kaspersky or Norton but they are not free. Kaspersky does offer a free online scan but it doesn’t remove what it finds. Second best free are Avast and AVG and others. The Microsoft firewall that comes free with XP and Vista is quite good but unfortunately provides no visibility. If you need visibility, try the free Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is very good but it is difficult for me to say it is the best. The best firewalls are not free. You have phishing filters in Firefox 3 and IE 7 and IE 8 (Smart Screen Filter) and AVG. It’s strictly a question of how often the phishing filter database gets updated with accurate information. It’s tough to say which is best.

I have kaspersky Internet security 2010 and when I use my standard account and enter my administration pw to install or download, will my anitivirus will work if I installed a rogue, virus, malware on accident?

Chosen Answer:

Yes, it will catch malware from all users. It may not catch rogue programs. They may add them to the definition database. Check the Kaspersky website to find out. Most rogues typically don’t exhibit the malicious behavior that heuristics will catch, even tho they are fraud programs.

Where can i download a free good antivirus ? How to do then ?

Chosen Answer:

Best solution is to back up all your files in case something happens.
A quick way would be to download a trial of a best leading anti virus companies like Kaspersky, Norton or ESET and download there updates and then run a full scan of your computer and this should safely remove your virus from your infected system.
Long solution is to reformat and reinstall the operating system.

I used to use Norton, McAfee, and Trend Micro. I’ve been using AVG on my PC for 4 years and am using iAntivirus on my Mac.

I have a real-life stalker and have reason to believe I could potentially have a virus on my computer. My virus scans come up clean, but I know it’s possible for stuff to fly under the radar and still not be caught.

Who’s the best out there now? Both for free and paid?

Chosen Answer:

Norton, Trend and AVG are all good. I don’t care for Mcafee, and I don’t know anything about iAntivius. But the only way you are going to get infected on your Mac is if you installed the malware. There are a few attacks out there that will infected a Mac without you installing it but it does not happen often. As far as a individual targeting you and being able to do that, no it’s not going to happen. This person would have to have tricked you into installing the malware. If that did not happen then you are worrying over nothing. Any malware that can not get picked up by a good security software is usually brand new, once it been out there for a short time the antivirus software will find it. Now there are some rootkits that are very hard to find, but you almost always have to download and install something to get infected that deep. If I thought something may have got by my antivirus program, I would get the free version of Malwarebytes and run a scan. If that did not find anything and I still thought I was infected I would install Comodo firewall. With the HIPS feature it will tell you everything that is trying to connect to the internet and if any programs are logging keystrokes. Also if any program is trying to make changes to your computer. There is no Mac version of Comodo firewall but they do have antivirus protection for a Mac. Not the same thing as a strong HIPS firewall. What is the best antivirus LOL Everyone is going to tell you what they use is the best or send you to a link that tests antivirus programs One site will say Bitdefender, another Kaspersky, and so on.
